birds fair isle, st kilda , outer hebrides intermediate in size between s. v. zetlandicus , nominate form, , subspecies placement varies according authority. dark juveniles typical of these island forms found in mainland scotland , elsewhere, indicating gene flow faroensis or zetlandicus, subspecies formerly considered isolated.


several other subspecies have been named, no longer considered valid. intergrades occur ranges of various subspecies meet. these include: s. v. ruthenus menzbier, 1891 , s. v. jitkowi buturlin, 1904, intergrades between vulgaris , poltaratskyi western russia; s. v. graecus tschusi, 1905 , s. v. balcanicus buturlin , harms, 1909, intergrades between vulgaris , tauricus southern balkans central ukraine , throughout greece bosporus; , s. v. heinrichi stresemann, 1928, intergrade between caucasicus , nobilior in northern iran. s. v. persepolis ticehurst, 1928 southern iran s (fars province) similar s. v. vulgaris, , not clear whether distinct resident population or migrants southeastern europe.
