the severn bridge railway linked lydney junction railway station on north bank of river severn sharpness docks on south bank via severn railway bridge. railway joined @ sharpness sharpness branch line had been built berkeley road railway station on bristol , gloucester railway docks in 1875. opening of bridge in 1879 provided cross-severn route forest of dean , south wales coal both sharpness docks , bristol.

on north side of river, bridge approached on series of arches, 1 of traversed gloucester chepstow , newport main line. severn bridge station on embankment leading these arches, on section of line ran parallel , north of main line both went lydney junction, 2 miles south west.

berkeley rd lydney train @ severn bridge station, looking east, towards severn bridge, hauled gw 1600 class 0-6-0t no. 1616 (built 12/49, withdrawn 10/59!).

severn bridge station had passing loop, small shelters on 2 platforms , signalbox. there short siding cattle pen @ end of station nearer bridge, closed in 1957. @ times, station known severn bridge blakeney .
