schmitt successful fencer in youth, winning 2 gold medals @ summer olympic games. later, served ambassador during 1990s, , member of european parliament fidesz party 2004 2010. after briefly serving speaker of national assembly of hungary in 2010, schmitt elected president of hungary in 263 59 vote in parliament of hungary; sworn in president on 6 august 2010.

from 1983 1988 schmitt general secretary of hungarian olympic committee, , in 1981–1990 undersecretary sport. in 1990, after end of communism in hungary, became president of hungarian olympic committee, post held until 2010.
