poland briefly resurrected—if in smaller frame—in 1807, when napoleon set duchy of warsaw. after defeat , implementation of congress of vienna treaty in 1815, russian-dominated congress kingdom of poland created in place. after congress, russia gained larger share of poland (with warsaw) and, after crushing insurrection in 1831, congress kingdom s autonomy abolished , poles faced confiscation of property, deportation, forced military service, , closure of own universities. after uprising of 1863, russification of polish secondary schools imposed , literacy rate dropped dramatically. in austrian portion, poles fared better, , allowed have representation in parliament , form own universities, , kraków , lemberg (lwów/lviv) became centers of polish culture , education. meanwhile, prussia germanized entire school system of polish subjects, , had no more respect polish culture , institutions russian empire. in 1915 client state of german empire , austria-hungary proposed , accepted central powers of world war i: regency kingdom of poland. after end of world war i, central powers surrender western allies, chaos of russian revolution , treaty of versailles allowed , helped restoration of poland s full independence after 123 years.
