transportation

hsl oversees operation of public transportation in helsinki region. however, apart select bus routes electric units, agency not operate rolling stock. therefore, relies on independent contractors operation of network.


metro

the helsinki metro operated hkl. metro line opened in 1982. system serves 25 stations in total on 2 lines, m1 , m2.


länsimetro

the first phase of länsimetro expansion program extended metro lines west lauttasaari , southern espoo, serving 8 new stations. second phase of extension slated open in 2020. @ time, total number of metro stations on line increase 25 30.


commuter rail

commuter rail service in region operated vr. there 52 stations in network, served 15 lines. out of hsl’s 3 rail networks, commuter rail far-reaching; serves northern, north-eastern, , western suburbs of city, helsinki airport in vantaa.


trams

trams in helsinki operated hkl. helsinki finnish city tram service in use of 11/2017. tram service in helsinki began in 1891.


buses

hsl offers 2 types of bus service. majority of bus lines operated standard buses, denoted in blue in network. in addition these, hsl operates handful of heavily prioritized crosstown lines. these lines marked in orange, symbolizing speed , passenger capacity of metro. lines, of 2/2017, 550 (westendinasema - itäkeskus (m)) , 560 (myyrmäki - rastila (m)).

ferry

a ferry suomenlinna part of hsl network. route operated on 2 ferries, suomenlinna , suomenlinna ii.


bikeshare

in 2016 hsl launched helsinki s bikeshare program. starting on 2nd of may, 2016, users register use network day fee of 5€, week fee of 10€ or entire season may end of october 25€. initial network included 500 bikes, 1 of user use travel of 50 stations another.


in late 2016 hsl announced details of revamped bikeshare system, time spanning 1500 bikes , 150 stations. expanded bike program brought service munkkiniemi, pasila, , vallila. in addition having 1400 bikes , 140 stations in helsinki, service covered matinkylä , olari in espoo 100 bikes , 10 stations.


the bikeshare system joint venture between citybike finland, hkl, , hsl. system sponsored hok-elanto s grocery shop chain alepa, has purchased commercial space on bicycles. due this, bicycles colloquially known alepapyörät (”alepa bikes”).
