world war ii

the 27th division federalized service on 15 october 1940 , sent fort mcclellan, alabama, training, commanded major general william haskell. @ time still retained world war organization of 2 brigades , 4 regiments. 53rd brigade consisted of 105th , 106th infantry regiments while 54th brigade contained 108th , 165th infantry regiments. initial call 1 year have ended in october 1941; president directed federalized national guard units extended 6 months. 27th division first divisional unit deployed continental united states , left california 7 days after japanese attack on pearl harbor in territory of hawaii. while in california 27th awaited orders ship out , concentrated on bringing authorized field strength of 1,012 officers , 21,314 enlisted men. division’s strength had been reduced discharges around 14,000 men. first elements of division boarded ships bound hawaii on 27 february 1942. during layover on west coast, 27th redesignated 27th infantry division.


the division remained on hawaii number of months, during time triangularized, 108th infantry regiment being reassigned 40th division. division has been triangularized has been given 3 infantry regiments instead of 4 of square division. final reorganization dismantled brigade structure , again dropped division’s strength 14,000 men. following reorganization, 27th division shifted oahu, relieve 25th infantry division, slated join u.s forces fighting in guadalcanal. of time in hawaii, 27th under command of brigadier general ralph pennel.


on 20 november 1942, 27th infantry division embarked on first combat assignment, capture of coral atoll of makin. 27th had new division commander, major general ralph smith. units 27th division occupied majuro atoll on 1 february 1944 , assaulted eniwetok island on 19 february of same year. in june 1944, division landed on saipan, regiments fought first time full division. following saipan division rested , reinforced @ espirto santo 7 months before further operations. during time 27th received final division commander, major general george griner jr. on 12 april 1945 division landed on okinawa, remain until september when sent japan briefly garrison duty. division mustered out in late december of same year. since arrival in pacific, 27th infantry division had suffered 1,512 killed in action, 4,980 wounded in action , 332 later succumbed wounds.


general smith had been removed command following dispute aggressive , eccentric marine commander, general holland howling mad smith had been in overall command of saipan invasion. holland smith claimed ralph smith had disregarded orders , mishandled 27th division, prompting relief order. later court of inquiry showed charges part unsubstantiated , general ralph smith given new command.


the 27th returned states deactivation in december 1945, longest serving national guard unit.

conversion light infantry

the 27th brigade reconstituted separate infantry brigade (light) in 1980s , established round-out brigade army’s 10th mountain division (light infantry) @ fort drum.


in 1990s, army national guard nationwide reorganized , 27th established 1 of 15 separate enhanced brigades, subject priority call in event of federal mobilization.


in 1998, 27th brigade committed disaster recovery operations in new york’s north country following devastating ice storm struck in january. 27th called again state emergency response in wake of destructive wind storm struck syracuse on labor day year forcing close new york state fair.


in summer of 2001, 27th brigade deployed intense three-week training period @ u.s. army’s joint readiness training center @ fort polk, la. 4,000 soldiers new york army national guard participated, making largest single exercise new york national guard since world war ii. terrorist attacks of 9-11, 2001 struck within weeks of when brigade returned home.


following extensive state , federal active duty home land defense in response terrorist attacks of 9-11, 2001 subordinate units of 27th underwent individual call ups operation iraqi freedom in 2003. in 2006, following return of new york national guard units federal active duty in iraq, new york army national guard re-set , 27th reorganized infantry brigade combat team. brigade formed when 27th infantry division deactivated in 1967. (however, previous 27th brigade active jul 1918 – feb 1919 part of 14th division, comprising 10th , 77th regiments.)


on 1 october 2003 elements 27th mobilized in support of operation iraqi freedom. comprising 2d battalion, 108th infantry (with volunteers 1st battalion, 108th infantry , 1st battalion, 105th infantry); company c, 427th support battalion; 827th engineers company; , fire support teams 1st battalion, 156th field artillery, task force hunter deployed iraq in feb 2004 after pre-deployment training @ fort drum, new york , fort polk, louisiana.


on 1 august 2007, unit redesignated 27th infantry brigade combat team, part of army s move modular force, , lost former status separate brigade. retaining historic shoulder patch 27th infantry division (united states), 27th became, once again, component of 42nd infantry division. until had been designated 27th infantry brigade (light) , had been 1 of fifteen enhanced brigades found in army national guard s force structure. 1985 until 2005, 27th had been round-out brigade of regular army s 10th mountain division (light infantry), based in upstate new york @ fort drum. lost mission when 10th added 3d , 4th brigades, composed of active-duty regular army soldiers, during own reorganization.


on 27 september 2007 advanced elements 27th, composed of soldiers 2d battalion, 108th infantry , 1st battalion, 69th infantry, volunteers 2d squadron, 101st cavalry, began shipping out new york state fort bragg pre-deployment training , exercises prior combat deployment in afghanistan. main brigade element mobilized on 16 january 2008. after conducting mobilization training @ fort bragg, nc deployed afghanistan beginning in march, 2008. in afghanistan, 27th consisted of 2 battalions: security forces (secfor) battalion , logistics task force (ltf) , responsible physical security of various base camps , operating bases. individuals sliced off of parent units , assigned police mentor teams (pmts) or embedded training teams (etts) while bulk of 27th conducted security operations fobs. resulted in 27th brigade soldiers serving throughout afghanistan. secfor battalion built around 2d squadron, 101st cavalry regiment. ltf conducted logistics support throughout task force phoenix area of operation , supported civil military operations throughout country. in-country 9 months.


the 27th bct took command of task force phoenix on 26 april 2008 218th bct, south carolina army national guard. relieved on 19 december 2008 33d bct, illinois army national guard.


the 27th bct mobilized in 2012 camp shelby mississippi, , left middle east not long thereafter. elements of brigade s 427th bsb trained in customs duties , organized support return of equipment afghanistan theater , 427th bsb s co (the transportation company) sent kuwait. 2nd battalion, 108th infantry, along 2nd squadron, 101st cavalry, , south carolina army national guard s 4th battalion, 118th infantry, based in union, s.c. deployed conduct security missions. co. 27th bstb based in lockport,n.y. conducted route clearance.
