while in mexico, ealy mays met celebrated mexican painter rufino tamayo took notice of work , became mentor. according mays, tamayo inspiration signature watermelon paintings. rufino tamayo painted red watermelons (sandias) [2] , ealy mays perfected blue watermelons. mays became familiar works of legendary mexican muralists josé clemente orozco , diego riviera, art on extremely large surfaces , murals impressed him. both artists come have great influence on mays work. participated in annual josé clemente orozco art competition. other exhibits in mexico included exhibitions @ tercer luger october show in guadalajara, american day celebration in guadalajara (fiesta americana) [3], october art fair in guadalajara, , @ mexico’s galeria clava.

on return mexico ealy mays accepted residency @ skowhegan school of painting , sculpture in maine, still regards significant period in life. colleagues in residence included fellow artist anish kapoor, video artist gary hill, photo-artist nan goldin, , bartist jessica stockholder. jacob lawrence in residence. lawrence later befriend, mentor, , provided hand written recommendation mays, studio museum in harlem.
