About the Belmont-Paul House Belmont-Paul Women's Equality National Monument

when construction on sewall house completed in 1800, house in adam federal style of architecture. historic american buildings survey has concluded structure has been modified on years no longer belongs single architectural style reflects many 7 different genres. other sources agree building no longer has definable architectural style, feel has retained enough features still characterized federal , feel more in georgian style.


the rectangular home 58 feet (18 m) long on south side , 130 feet (40 m) long on west side. look-out basement third below-ground. main building consists of 2 , half stories. roof gabled, although changed partial mansard roof in 1879. house made of brick laid in flemish bond, although areas laid in english bond , american bond , have no particular pattern. principal facade, faces constitution avenue, 3 bays wide. front door features sidelights , overhead fanlight in peacock design. molded semicircular arch keystone surmounts fanlight. paired stairs lead landing before main entrance, while basement accessed door below landing. round brick arch doorway provides access below-landing space.


a  1 ⁄2-story kitchen addition attached northeast corner of house on north side. one-story stable (which serves library) attached north side of kitchen addition. these 19th century additions structure. 20th century addition, on west side of kitchen, forms enclosed terrace. terrace addition reaches south wall of stable/library, helping create , enclose hall between 2 additions.


the double-hung windows on principal facade on first , second floors consist of main panel 3 three rectangular panes wide, sidelight panels 2 on 2 vertical rectangular pane wide. mullions divide 3 panels. each of these windows has stone lintel circular bas-relief design in corner, , false shutters. in mansard roof @ front of house 3 gabled dormers. each dormer surrounded decorative millwork 2 dentils below, square tuscan pillars indents on either side, lintel circular bas-relief, , plain triangular pediment.


original windows on other facades double-hung, main panels 3 three rectangular panes wide. each of these has stone lintel circular bas-relief design. windows added later lack lintel.


the interior floor plan typical of adam federalist house, center hall , 2 symmetrical rooms on either side. third (or attic) floor consisted of secondary suite, kitchenette , full bathroom. on kitchen addition 2 floors, each three-quarters normal height. narrow, spiral servants stairs provides access bedroom , full bath on each floor above.
