arsenal entered football league cup in second round, drawn against hull city in two-legged tie. @ boothferry park, marwood scored against former side in 2–0 win. arsenal made light work of second leg, @ highbury smith scored twice make of progress fourth round. @ stage team exited competition, against liverpool. original tie @ anfield ended in 1–1 draw, meant replayed @ highbury. both sides failed convert chances on 90 minutes, resulting in second replay @ villa park. merson opened scoring, before steve mcmahon brought liverpool level , teammate john aldridge got second knock arsenal out of competition.
