formation

the star (originally known evening star , toronto daily star) created in 1892 striking toronto news printers , writers, led future mayor of toronto , social reformer horatio clarence hocken, became newspaper s founder, along future mayor, jimmy simpson.


the star first printed on toronto world presses, , @ formation world owned 51% interest in silent partner. arrangement lasted 2 months, during time rumoured william findlay billy maclean, world s proprietor, considering selling star riordon family. after extensive fundraising campaign among star staff, maclean agreed sell interest hocken.


the paper did poorly in first few years. hocken sold out within year, , several owners followed in succession until railway entrepreneur sir william mackenzie bought in 1896. new editors, edmund e. sheppard , frederic thomas nicholls, moved entire star operation same building used magazine saturday night. continue until joseph e. holy joe atkinson, backed funds raised supporters of sir wilfrid laurier, bought paper. supporters included senator george cox, william mulock, peter charles larkin , timothy eaton.

atkinson star s editor 1899 until death in 1948. opposition , criticism of nazi regime saw paper become 1 of first north american papers banned in germany.

shortly before death in 1948, joseph e. atkinson transferred ownership of paper charitable organization given mandate of continuing paper s liberal tradition. in 1949, province of ontario passed charitable gifts act, barring charitable organizations owning large parts of profit-making businesses, required star sold.


atkinson s had directed profits paper s operations promotion , maintenance of social, scientific , economic reforms charitable in nature, benefit of people of province of ontario , stipulated paper sold people shared social views. 5 trustees of charitable organization circumvented act buying paper , swearing before supreme court of ontario continue became known atkinson principles :

on may 28, 2007, star unveiled redesigned paper features larger type, narrower pages, fewer , shorter articles, renamed sections, more prominence local news, , less international news, columnists, , opinion pieces. however, on january 1, 2009, star reverted previous format. star p.m., free newspaper in pdf format downloaded newspaper s website each weekday afternoon, discontinued in october 2007, thirteen months after launch.
