the built-in microsoft windows window manager has, since windows 95, followed traditional stacking approach default. can act rudimentary tiling window manager.
to tile windows, user selects them in taskbar , uses context menu choice tile vertically or tile horizontally. however, wording of these options misleading. choosing tile vertically cause windows tile horizontally take on vertical shape, while choosing tile horizontally cause windows tile vertically take on horizontal shape. these options later changed in windows vista show windows side side , show windows stacked, respectively. windows 7 adds ability drag windows either side of screen create simple side-by-side tiled layout, or top of screen maximize.
the windows 8 gui introduced new basic tiling window manager. in windows 10, users able tile windows quarters.
history
the first version (windows 1.0) featured tiling window manager, partly because of litigation apple claiming ownership of overlapping window desktop metaphor. due complaints, next version (windows 2.0) followed desktop metaphor. later versions of operating system stuck approach default behaviour.
