the years of 1840s saw considerable upsurge of interest in developing romanesque revival style of leading architects of period. during 19th century architecture selected anglican churches depended on churchmanship of particular congregations. whereas high churches , anglo-catholic, influenced oxford movement, built in gothic revival architecture; low churches , broad churches of period built in romanesque revival style. architects specialising in romanesque revival took designs different local styles of european romanesque.

the work of benjamin ferrey can considered similar of thomas penson, based on english , french romanesque traditions. example church of st nicholas @ east grafton in wiltshire, built in 1842-44. here chancel terminates in apse , west has overlapping arcading , chevron decoration on entrance door. central crossing tower , arcaded windows on west frontis approached through stone romanesque lych gate.
a more important work ferrey church of st. james great @ morpeth, northumberland. church, supposed modelled on cathedral of monreale in sicily, built between 1844 , 1846. unusual arched gate acceptably sicilian in inspiration , similar portico @ cathedral @ monreale, rest of composition has more in common french , belgian romanesque. further church in style christ church in melplash in dorset of 1845-6. has heavy crossing tower , in many respects resembles church of st. james great @ morpeth.

st michael , angels barton le street, north yorkshire. church extensively rebuilt in 1869-1871 william perkin , sons of leeds. unlike tickencote there no record of church replaced. building contains extensive , impressive range of genuine romanesque, these seem have been largely repositioned. pews , other furnishings in romanesque revival style. rebuilding financed hugo francis meynell-ingram.
