history

the squadron first established @ 1 january 1949 @ rpaf station mauripur light bomber unit. supposed equipped bristol brigand first aircraft crashed before arriving in pakistan. type s procurement subsequently halted , unit disbanded in february 1949. in june 1951 unit restored fighter interceptor squadron , became paf s first jet squadron introduction of supermarine attacker. first commanded squadron leader a. rahim khan, unit remain paf s jet squadron until 18 january 1956 when unit re-equipped f-86f sabre , role changed fighter bomber squadron.


the squadron took part in 1965 indo-pak war part of no. 33 wing @ paf base sargodha (now paf base mushaf). arrows flew 227 sorties, including air defence , close air support missions, during 17-day war. ten hawker hunters , 3 folland gnats of indian air force shot down during these missions, further 3 hawker hunters damaged. 1 f-86 shot down in indian territory during fighter sweep mission, flown flying officer shaukat.


when sanctions , arms embargo placed on pakistan u.s. after war, arrows re-equipped shenyang f-6 in 1966 , role changed air superiority. unit moved paf base rafiqui in january 1971, moving sargodha during 1971 indo-pak war. again, squadron flew air defence , close air support missions during sukhoi su-7 , mig-21 shot down. 1 of squadron s f-6 fighters shot down on india. after war squadron returned paf base rafiqui.


during these wars arrows credited highest number of kills of paf squadron. in january 1983 unit again moved paf base sargodha , became first squadron re-equip f-16 fighting falcon, becoming multi-role unit introduction of f-16a/b block 15.


the squadron termed exceptional after inspection inspectorate team on 28 october 1991. in 1992 imminent threat pakistani nuclear facilities lead squadron flying missions under national contingency plan named thunderbolt 19 february 1992. after nuclear tests india in may 1998, squadron deployed on 24 may 1998 wartime location @ satellite base perform day/night air defence alert (ada) duties until 28 may 1998 when pakistani nuclear tests completed.

jetstream 1981 - awarded professionals trophy.
exercise hit hard xii (1990) - deployed paf base masroor take part in exercise , completed guided bomb trials @ sonmiani test range.
july 1991 - participated in dact camp no. 5, 18 , 20 squadrons.
high mark 1993 - 225 kills awarded, 100% mission success rate achieved, 100% accuracy achieved using atlis ii targeting pod , laser-guided bombs.
