while arniston @ st helena on outward journey, undertook transport troops there join lord elphinstone, undertaking expedition capture cape colony dutch. on 10 july george vancouver arrived in hms discovery. vancouver returning england after four-and-a-half-year long voyage of exploration. transferred arniston 4 field guns had been carrying, ammunition had left them, onward transmission elphinstone. discovery s boats helped in ferrying of troops shore arniston.

during voyage arniston had anchored @ benkulen on 27 june 1800, when 26-gun french privateer confiance attacked her. arniston cut anchor , gave chase, firing several broadsides other ship, faster french ship able make escape. on 9 october 1800, east indiaman kent less fortunate; confiance capture kent after two-hour engagement.

on voyage arniston sailed under letter of marque in name of captain james jameson, , dated 24 march 1804. itinerary was:
on 9 june 1804, arniston left st. helens, isle of wight, part of convoy of 9 east indiamen of british east india company, bound china. indiamen perseverance, neptune, taunton castle, ceres, royal charlotte, alnwick castle, true briton, , cuffnells. hms athenienne provided escort.
the fleet arrived @ rio de janeiro around 14–18 august. passed cape of hope. here, rather passing through indian ocean , straits of malacca, fleet sailed south of western australia , through bass strait. objectives two-fold: avoid french ships reported in indian ocean, , improve charting of bass strait.
the ships sailed norfolk island, next rendezvous point after saint paul island, members had separated. taunton castle had separated in south atlantic , although arrived @ norfolk island 3 days after fleet had sailed on, did not rejoin rest of fleet until arrived @ haerlem bay, in china.
the arrival of athenienne , east indiamen @ norfolk island sowed panic among colonists there feared french flotilla had arrived.
the fleet arrived @ whampoa in mid-january 1805. fleet returned england via straits of malacca. arniston, example, crossed second bar on 14 february, reached malacca on 21 march , st helena on 30 june, , arrived @ long reach on 15 september.
