the male in average 28 cm long , weighs 104 g, female 23 cm long , weighing 60 g approximately. yellow-rumped cacique slim bird, long tail, blue eyes, , pale yellow pointed bill. has black plumage, apart bright yellow rump, tail base, lower belly , wing epaulets . female duller black male, , juvenile bird resembles female, has dark eyes , brown bill base.


the song of male yellow-rumped cacique brilliant mixture of fluting notes cackles, wheezes , mimicry. there many varied calls, , active colony can heard considerable distance.


it has 3 subspecies:



cacicus cela cela – east of andes, santa marta coast of colombia central bolivia , eastern brazil.
cacicus cela vitellinus – panama canal zone base of sierra nevada de santa marta , central magdalena valley of colombia. first recorded in serranía de las quinchas on january 17, 2006.
cacicus cela flavicrissus – eastern andes foothills esmeraldas province (ecuador) tumbes province (peru).

the latter 2 may separate species, saffron-rumped cacique.
