thomas dow jones started career apprentice stonecutter , mason alongside father in ohio. in 1841, traveled cincinnati answer ad proposal build panama canal. proposal fell through, , jones turned sculpting grave monuments and, later, portrait busts. received many commissions portrait busts of prominent individuals such chief justice salmon p. chase, statesman henry clay, , general winfield scott, , opened studio on broadway in new york in 1851. thomas dow jones member of national academy of design, exhibited work 1853 1856.
