Brief history International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants



the first edition of icncp, agreed in 1952 in wageningen , published in 1953, has been followed 7 subsequent editions - in 1958 (utrecht), 1961 (update of 1958), 1969 (edinburgh), 1980 (seattle), 1995 (edinburgh), 2004 (toronto) , 2009 (wageningen). ninth (most recent) edition published in 2016.


william stearn has outlined origins of icncp, tracing international horticultural congress of brussels in 1864, when letter alphonse de candolle edouard morren tabled. set out de candolle s view latin names should reserved species , varieties found in wild, non-latin or fancy names used garden forms. karl koch supported position @ 1865 international botanical , horticultural congress , @ 1866 international botanical congress, suggested future congresses should deal nomenclatural matters. de candolle, had legal background, drew lois de la nomenclature botanique (rules of botanical nomenclature). when adopted international botanical congress of paris in 1867, became first version of today s international code of nomenclature algae, fungi, , plants (icn).


article 40 of lois de la nomenclature botanique dealt names of plants of horticultural origin:



among cultivated plants, seedlings, crosses [métis] of uncertain origin , sports, receive fancy names in common language, distinct possible latin names of species or varieties. when can traced botanical species, subspecies or variety, indicated sequence of names (pelargonium zonale mistress-pollock).



this article survived redrafting of international rules of botanical nomenclature until 1935 , core sentiments remain in present-day icncp of 2009.


the first version (1953) published royal horticultural society 29 page booklet, edited william stearn. following structure of botanical code, icncp set out in form of initial set of principles followed rules , recommendations subdivided articles. amendments icncp prompted international symposia cultivated plant taxonomy allow rulings made international commission on nomenclature of cultivated plants. each new version includes summary of changes made previous version; changes have been summarised period 1953 1995.
