early locations

the first lifeboat in cornwall purchased penzance in 1803. part of cost paid lloyd s of london sold, in 1812, without ever being used in service , not replaced. in 1824 district association formed part of national institution preservation of life shipwreck , next lifeboat in mount s bay again stationed @ penzance 1826 1828 formed institution.


the station lapsed until 1851, when lifeboat again stationed in town. boat kept @ several different places around town until boathouse built in 1856, £88, rnli (as institution known), @ entrance railway station. there local controversy when boat did not launch on several occasions in 1862, , consequence, there proposal move lifeboat newlyn, have been unpopular residents of penzance. compromise lifeboat station moved wherrytown, new timber lifeboat house opened in 1867 @ bottom of alexandra road, near coastguard station. decided move penzance harbour, , in 1884 new boathouse built of lamorna granite @ foot of jennings street, @ cost of £575–6s–6d. paid £1000 gift henry martn harvey of hexworthy, paid new lifeboat (dora) , carriage. in 1908, penzance lifeboat elizabeth , blanche moved newlyn, kept under tarpaulin beside harbour, although 1884 boathouse remained in use until 1917 reserve station.

the lifeboat remained @ newlyn until 1913, when new boathouse built @ penlee point south of newlyn on outskirts of mousehole. elevated little above water, , lifeboat launched down slipway open water @ states of tide. old pulling , sailing lifeboat replaced 1 motor in 1922. several similar motor lifeboats follow, culminating in solomon browne, wooden, twin engined, 47ft watson-class boat arrived @ station in 1960.


in 1936, coxswain frank blewitt awarded bronze medal rescuing crew of 9 ss taycraig after ran aground in mount s bay during gale. coxswain edwin madron received silver medal , mechanic johny drew bronze medal exceptional service in april 1947. took w , s out 30 feet (9.1 m) seas rescue 8 people hms warspite (03) ran aground on way breakers yard after had been retired @ end of second world war. madron subject of life in 1957 when surprised eamonn andrews @ king s theatre, hammersmith, london.


in january 1975, solomon browne launched force 12 hurricane when reported 13 crew members of mv lovat had abandoned ship 24 miles (39 km) south west of lizard point. helicopter saved 2 people rest drowned. lifeboat had drop safety rails around deck bodies hauled out of sea, while boat rolling side-to-side @ 60˚ , seas washing across boat. @ sea 8 hours. coxswain, trevelyan richards, awarded bronze medal.

on 19 december 1981 solomon browne launched go aid of mv union star after engines failed 8 miles (13 km) east of wolf rock. winds gusting @ 90 knots (100 mph; 170 km/h) – hurricane force 12 on beaufort scale – , whipping waves 60 feet (18 m) high. on board crew of 5 , 3 members of captain s family. helicopter had been unable rescue them , lifeboat crew of 8 men went alongside. after several attempts 4 people managed jump across; captain s family , 1 of men apparently safe. lifeboat radioed we’ve got 4 off ; last ever heard on either vessel.


lifeboats summoned sennen cove, lizard , st mary s try colleagues penlee. sennen cove lifeboat found impossible make headway round land s end. lizard lifeboat found serious hole in hull when returned slipway after fruitless search. wreckage solomon browne found along shore, , union star lay capsized onto rocks west of tater du lighthouse. some, not all, of 16 bodies recovered.


within day of disaster enough people mousehole had volunteered form new lifeboat crew. coxswain trevelyan richards posthumously awarded royal national lifeboat institution s gold medal, while remainder of crew posthumously awarded bronze medals. station awarded gold medal service plaque. disaster prompted massive public appeal benefit of village of mousehole raised on £3 million (£10.6 million of 2016), although there outcry when government tried tax donations.

after loss of solomon browne, penlee point station remained in use until 1983 when mabel alice, larger, faster arun-class all-weather lifeboat (alb) acquired, , new lifeboat station constructed @ newlyn harbour, new lifeboat kept afloat @ mooring. despite move, station continues known penlee .


in 1991, d-class (ea16) inshore lifeboat (ilb) stationed on opposite side of mount s bay @ marazion (although kept @ st michael s mount). proved difficult find enough volunteer crews in small village, in 2001 station closed , larger b class boat added complement @ penlee, new boathouse built house it. following year new pontoon built in newlyn harbour crews board alb more easily.


on 16 december 1994, mabel alice , sennen cove lifeboat launched aid of julian paul adrift in storm west of longships. fishing boat s propeller had been fouled , towed newlyn harbour. neil brockman, coxswain/mechanic of penlee lifeboat, awarded bronze medal seamanship, leadership , meritorious conduct, terry george, counterpart sennen cove.


in 2003, ivan ellen, new severn-class alb, acquired station replace arun-class predecessor. in 2016, stations capability further enhanced introduction of replacement atlantic 85-class ilb, mollie & ivor dent.
