in 2000 roland gumpert proposed new generation sports car. 1 of first concerns of car was street-legal car ready racetrack. returned germany @ end of 2001, after more 3 years in china head of sales , marketing, responsible development of dealer network of audi-vw joint enterprise. after returned germany, automobile designer roland mayer asked him if assist him in building prototype supercar. audi approved gumpert s involvement in project, on condition that, if did develop new supercar, not prototype, series product.


the company, located in altenburg, germany, founded in 2004 under name gmg sportwagenmanufaktur altenburg gmbh. technical guidelines defined , first designs of car drawn marco vanetta. upon vanetta s completion of process, first 1:4 scale model of gumpert s car produced in 2001.


gumpert continued development of apollo, along technical university of munich , ingolstadt university of applied sciences. have assisted constructional work, computer simulations, , wind tunnel tests. research , development helped forming blueprint first 1:1 scale model. finally, 2 prototype apollos constructed. production of apollo started in october 2005.
