solomon islands
after shakedown off bermuda, manning departed charleston navy yard on 12 december 1943 escort troopship convoy. steaming via panama, reached pearl harbor on 1 january 1944. 5 days later sailed south pacific where, after touching ellice islands, reached florida island, solomons, on 21 january. during next 2 months patrolled off guadalcanal submarines , escorted convoys solomons new hebrides, new caledonia, , samoa. in addition, escorted fleet oiler task group out of espiritu santo ocean rendezvous north of solomons. there on 26 march, tankers refueled ships of fast carrier task force prior intensive raids 3rd fleet carriers against japanese bases in carolines.
new guinea
manning departed solomons on 5 april , reached milne bay, new guinea, 7th begin temporary duty 7th fleet. operating escort division 37, sailed in convoy 19 april , escorted transports , lsts humboldt bay arrived on 24th. during next 2 days, screened approaches humboldt bay; thence, returned cape cretin on 29 april. after screening reinforcement convoy aitape in may, manning continued support westward advance of allies in new guinea. escort attack transports, arrived off wakde, new guinea, on 17 may , screened seaward during amphibious invasion. continued escort , asw patrols along northern coast of new guinea until 24 june when departed under tow espiritu santo repairs damaged screws , shafts.
arriving on 30 june, manning underwent repairs , overhaul during next month. thence, sailed solomons on 14 august, , until 9 october made convoy escort runs out of solomons russells, new hebrides, admiralties, , new guinea. arrived @ manus on 11 october; and, after reporting duty 7th fleet, sailed 15th support american invasion of philippines.

manning steamed kossol passage, palaus, on 20 october, joined other escorts screen tankers , ammunition ships sailing supply ships in leyte gulf. arrived off leyte on 23 october, , more week escorted ammunition ships during replenishment operations. between 24 , 28 october, american ships repelled numerous japanese air attacks. gunfire manning splashed twin-engined bomber during evening attack on 24 october, , concentrated gunfire chemical smoke helped drive off enemy planes , protect american shipping in gulf.
departing leyte on 1 november, manning steamed via kossol humboldt bay arrived 6th. 8 days later, joined screen task group of transports, lsts, , amphibious craft steaming via biak leyte. ships came under air attack @ dusk on 23 november, effective gunfire task group drove off attackers. manning entered leyte gulf 24th. screened transport area, 20 mm guns hit , repelled enemy dive bomber.
manning sailed lsts new guinea later same day , arrived hollandia on 30 november. flagship cortdiv 37, reported duty service force, 7th fleet, on 1 december. during next 4 weeks took part in intensive anti-aircraft , asw exercises off new guinea. thence, joined screen convoy of fleet oilers , sailed on 28 december philippines , invasion of luzon.
steaming via leyte gulf , surigao strait, manning entered mindanao sea on 2 january 1945. evening task group repulsed enemy bombers, , during next 2 days american gunfire drove off additional air attacks. manning reached mangarin bay, mindoro, 4 january, , until 21 february operated out of mangarin bay in support of luzon operations. beginning on 7 january, screened fleet oilers during refueling of lingayen attack ships in south china sea. provided anti-aircraft , anti-submarine protection tankers , ammunition ships anchored @ mangarin bay, , made asw sweeps along coast of mindoro , luzon. thence, returned san pedro bay, leyte, on 22 february , underwent tender availability until march.
manning reported duty philippine sea frontier on 6 march. 2 days later, sailed in screen of convoy bound admiralties. more 2 months escorted convoys out of leyte new guinea, palaus, admiralties, , back. u.s. ground forces, buttressed might of american seapower, secured control of philippines, manning, in mid-may, resumed asw patrols in south china sea. operating out of manila, patrolled american convoy lanes subic bay southern tip of mindoro during final 3 months of fighting in western pacific.
manning completed final patrol 4 days after cessation of hostilities; and, japanese representatives signed formal surrender documents on 2 september, departed subic bay escort okinawa-bound convoy of lcts , lcis. after returning okinawa on 12 september, sailed other escorts of cortdiv 37 united states on 1 october. steaming via marshalls , pearl harbor, reached san diego on 23 october , reported duty san diego group of pacific reserve fleet.
decommissioning
manning decommissioned @ san diego on 15 january 1947 , berthed first @ san diego, and, later @ bremerton, washington. declared unfit further naval service in mid-1968, , name struck navy list on 31 july 1968.
