in 1998, toronto star purchased majority stake in sing tao s canadian newspaper, jointly owns sing tao news corporation. sing tao (canada) encountered controversy in april 2008, after media watchers discovered paper had altered translated toronto star article 2008 beijing summer olympic games protests adhere chinese government s official line. sing tao s editor wilson chan fired on this.


paywall

in october 2012, star announced intention implement paywall on website, thestar.com, made effective on august 13, 2013. readers daily home delivery had free access digital content. without digital subscription can view ten articles month. paywall not apply sister sites, such wheels.ca (automotive news , classifieds) or workopolis (career search). however, during late 2013, star announced end paywall, did on april 1, 2015, amid lack of digital subscriptions.


star touch tablet app

on september 15, 2015, toronto star released toronto star touch tablet app, free interactive news app interactive advertisements. @ launch, available ipad, uses ios. based on similar app montreal-based la presse released in 2013, star touch first such app english-language news organization, quality-wise. in on 50 days since launch, app had reached 100,000-download milestone. android version launched on december 1, 2015. ios version rated 12+ apple s app store guidelines , android version rated mature 17+ entertainment software rating board (esrb).


closing of printing plants

on january 15, 2016, toronto star announced closing printing plant, , outsourcing print production starting in july 2016. newspaper said close printing plant can better focus on digital outlets.
