band history

the band named after arkell street in westdale neighbourhood of hamilton, near mcmaster university lived , practice music. 5 original band members attended mcmaster lead singer max kerman graduated honours ba in political science. kerman met guitarist mike deangelis @ mcmaster welcome week event 2 discovered had identical taste in music.

jackson square (2008-2011)

arkells debut album jackson square released 28 october 2008 on dine alone records. in late 2008, arkells toured canada opening act matt mays & el torpedo. later year, on november 22, performed halftime show @ vanier cup in hometown. in 2009 toured waking eyes across canada. arkells featured on aux.tv s alt sessions performed full ep.

in october, 2009, arkells won favourite new artist casby award (short canadian artists selected you) toronto radio station 102.1 edge @ ceremony , concert @ toronto s kool haus. band performed @ event.

in april, 2010, arkells won juno award new group of year, , on may 15, 2010, picked open them crooked vultures @ air canada centre in toronto.

they made headlines while playing set @ horseshoe tavern in toronto after 2010 music video awards, when rapper shad , pop singer kesha joined them onstage freestyle , sing along during cover of ms. jackson outkast.

michigan left (2011-2014)

in 2011 band wrote , recorded second album michigan left, released on october 18 of year. first single, whistleblower , released itunes on july 5, 2011. whistleblower has been used intro music 2011-2012 calgary hitmen hockey team , featured in ea sports nhl 13 video game. band released second song, kiss cam , in july.

on 6 october 2011 announced dan griffin leaving band go school. replaced anthony carone.

in 2012 arkells won 2012 juno award group of year. band has become known performing spontaneous motown cover sets, @ osheaga after party in montreal, , while stranded in st. john s newfoundland. in september 2012, band played jian ghomeshi s 1982 book launch in toronto. band has started tradition of sending fans signed postcards , free downloads @ christmas.

high noon (2014-2016)

on april 7, 2014, arkells released first track, never thought happen third album, produced tony hoffer (beck,the kooks, m83). 1 month later, on may 13, band released album s first single come light , , confirmed title of record high noon . record released on dine alone/universal records, august 5, 2014.

arkells have toured extensively, including tours in united states lights, tokyo police club, postelles, x ambassadors, , lydia; european touring billy talent, augustines, british sea power, , anti-flag canadian touring metric, tragically hip, hollerado, , sam roberts.

at juno awards of 2015, arkells won juno award group of year , juno award rock album of year. high noon long listed polaris prize in 2015.

on october 23, 2015 band released new ep, “study music”’ self-produced , released on universal music canada/dine alone records.

morning report (2016-present)

arkells began teasing new material forthcoming album on tour in spring of 2016. fourth album, morning report released on august 5, 2016. first single, private school , debuted on may 6, 2016, , charted @ #1 summer. video features cameos lights, dave monks of tokyo police club , steve jocz (formerly of sum 41), directed video.

the arkells song round , round featured in soundtrack of ea sports game nhl 17.

at juno awards of 2017, arkells nominated juno award group of year , juno award rock album of year. performed viral hit drake s dad live on television broadcast.

arkells released new single on april 7, 2017, entitled knocking @ door . track shot #1 on canadian alt charts, spent 14 weeks @ #1. became first #1 active rock single. performed track live summer on 2017 nhl awards in las vegas , 2017 iheartradio mmvas in toronto. in summer of 2017, band toured festival circuit, playing coachella valley music , arts festival, osheaga festival, , sasquatch! music festival.
