climate sensitivity

lindzen hypothesized earth may act infrared iris. sea surface temperature increase in tropics result in reduced cirrus clouds , more infrared radiation leakage earth s atmosphere. additionally, rising temperatures cause more extensive drying due increased areas of atmospheric subsidence. hypothesis suggests negative feedback counter effects of co2 warming lowering climate sensitivity. satellite data ceres has led researchers investigating lindzen s theory conclude iris effect instead warm atmosphere. lindzen disputed this, claiming negative feedback high-level clouds still larger weak positive feedback estimated lin et al.

lindzen has expressed concern on validity of computer models used predict future climate change. lindzen said predicted warming may overestimated because of handling of climate system s water vapor feedback. feedback due water vapor major factor in determining how warming expected occur increased atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide, , existing computer models assume positive feedback — is, climate warms, amount of water vapour held in atmosphere increase, leading further warming. contrast, lindzen believes temperature increases cause more extensive drying due increased areas of atmospheric subsidence result of iris effect, nullifying future warming. claim criticized climatologist gavin schmidt, director of nasa s goddard institute space studies, notes more generally-accepted understanding of effects of iris effect , cites empirical cases large , relatively rapid changes in climate such el nino events, ultra plinian eruption of mount pinatubo in 1991, , recent trends in global temperature , water vapor levels show that, predicted in generally-accepted view, water vapor increases temperature increases, , decreases temperatures decrease.

contrary ipcc s assessment, lindzen said climate models inadequate. despite accepted errors in models, e.g., treatment of clouds, modelers still thought climate predictions valid. lindzen has stated due non-linear effects of carbon dioxide in atmosphere, co2 levels around 30% higher pre-industrial levels temperatures have responded 75% 0.6 °c (1.08 °f) of expected value doubling of co2. ipcc (2007) estimates expected rise in temperature due doubling of co2 3 °c (5.4 °f), ± 1.5°. lindzen has given estimates of earth s climate sensitivity 0.5 °c based on erbe data. these estimates criticized kevin e. trenberth , others, , lindzen accepted paper included stupid mistakes . when interviewed, said embarrassing , , added technical details of satellite measurements sort of grotesque. lindzen , choi revised paper , submitted pnas. 4 reviewers of paper, 2 of whom had been selected lindzen, criticized paper , pnas rejected publication. lindzen , choi succeeded in getting little known korean journal publish 2011 paper. andrew dessler published paper found errors in lindzen , choi 2011, , concluded observations had presented not in fundamental disagreement mainstream climate models, nor provide evidence clouds causing climate change. suggestions significant revisions mainstream climate science required therefore not supported.

nas panel

in 2001, lindzen served on 11-member panel organized national academy of sciences. panel s report, titled climate change science: analysis of key questions, has been cited. lindzen subsequently publicly criticized report summary not referring statement in full report twenty years of temperature measurements short period estimating long term trends .

ipcc activities

lindzen worked on chapter 7 of 2001 ipcc working group 1, considers physical processes active in real world climate. had been contributor chapter 4 of 1995 ipcc second assessment . described full 2001 ipcc report admirable description of research activities in climate science although criticized summary policymakers. lindzen stated in may 2001 did not summarize ipcc report had been amended state more definite conclusions. emphasized fact summary had not been written scientists alone. nas panel on lindzen served says summary result of dialogue between scientists , policymakers.

kyoto accord

of kyoto accord, has said agreed kyoto protocol, itself, nothing stabilize atmospheric co2 levels. vocal in advocating bush administration not ratify kyoto protocol believed increase cost of electricity no gain , put signatory states @ competitive disadvantage.

cato institute

in announcement on december 27, 2013, cato institute said @ cato, lindzen s focus on interaction between science , policymakers , study whether move largely private funding public support has introduced biases science , public policies informed science.
