1951–1954 under democratically elected prime minister, mohammed mossadegh, anglo-iranian oil company nationalized. mosaddegh ousted in joint cia/mi6-organized coup (dubbed operation ajax), installs formerly exiled shah mohammad reza pahlavi throne de facto dictator, , oil companies resume control. however, pay higher royalties iranian government.
1946–1979 father before him, mohammad reza pahlavi attempts modernize iran imposing strict central government control , limiting local autonomy , culture. minority languages suppressed , not allowed taught in schools. government seized settled tribal lands of arabs, bakhtiaris, laks, , lurs oil industry or government purposes. ethnic discontent simmered during mohammad reza pahlavi s reign. however, overt expression of unhappiness limited, state energetically suppressed dissent.
