on november 3, 2009, dunne announced seek democratic nomination governor of vermont in 2010. dunne 1 of 5 democrats vying nomination.


during final weeks of campaign, dunne s brother josh suffered life-threatening stroke required surgery. dunne missed 3 of final debates, , removed himself campaign trail 2 weeks, returning on august 20.


the primary held on august 24, 2010. dunne finished fourth 20.8% of vote. finished ahead of susan bartlett (5.1%), behind peter shumlin (24.8%), doug racine (24.6%), , deborah markowitz (23.9%). 4 percentage points separated top 4 candidates, making 1 of closest primaries in vermont history. shumlin went on win general election, , primary opponents dunne subsequently joined shumlin administration.
