the first movement begins triumphant orchestral opening on tonic chord, , maintains playfulness while using chromatic passages show off soloist s technique. second movement characteristically serene , peaceful, while closing rondo brings youth-filled playfulness heard in opening movement.


i. allegro con brio

this movement in concerto variant of sonata form (double-exposition sonata form). orchestra introduces main theme , subordinate theme in exposition. second exposition in f major. development wanders in key , ends on long b-flat major scale. recapitulation similar exposition , in b-flat major.


there rather difficult cadenza composed beethoven himself, albeit later concerto itself. stylistically, cadenza different concerto, makes use of first opening theme. beethoven applies melody cadenza in several different ways, changing character each time , displaying innumerable ways musical theme can used , felt.

ii. adagio

this movement in e-flat major, subdominant key. many slow movements, has aba (ternary) form, opening section introduces themes, , middle section develops them. movement written between 1787 , 1789 in bonn. average performances last 8 9 minutes.


iii. rondo, molto allegro

this movement takes form of rondo (abacaba). beethoven s playfulness of period can heard here. there constant angular feel within 6/8 melody beethoven plays on each return of rondo theme. c section highly contrasting others, being in minor key , more forceful , stern in meaning. also, prior last appearance of rondo theme, beethoven brings piano in in wrong key of g major, before orchestra discovers discrepancy , returns correct tonic key. musical joke can seen in many of beethoven s subsequent compositions.
