the crimean status referendum, 2014 referendum on status of crimea held on march 16, 2014, legislature of autonomous republic of crimea local government of sevastopol, both subdivisions of ukraine @ time. referendum asked people of crimea whether wanted join russia federal subject, or if wanted restore 1992 crimean constitution , crimea s status part of ukraine.

supreme council of crimea considered ousting of ukrainian president viktor yanukovych in 2014 ukrainian revolution coup , new interim government in kiev illegitimate , stated referendum response these developments. referendum regarded illegitimate countries including european union members, united states , canada because of events surrounding including plebiscite being held while peninsula occupied russian soldiers. thirteen members of united nations security council voted in favor of resolution declaring referendum invalid, russia vetoed , china abstained. united nations general assembly resolution later adopted, vote of 100 in favor vs. 11 against 58 abstentions, declared referendum invalid , affirmed ukraine s territorial integrity. mejlis of crimean tatar people called boycott of referendum.


russia officially recognized results of crimean referendum , claims unilateral kosovo declaration of independence has set precedent, allows secession of crimea ukraine. such parallels disputed western scholars, however.


the official result autonomous republic of crimea 96.77 percent vote integration of region russian federation 83.1 percent voter turnout. mejlis deputy chairman akhtem chiygoz stated actual turnout not have exceed 30–40 percent,whilst former russian government adviser andrey illarionov stated actual support reunification of crimea russia 34 percent, citing results of previous polls on past 3 years. however, according gallup s survey performed on 21–27 april, 82.8% of crimean people consider referendum results reflecting crimeans’ views, , 73.9% of crimeans crimea s becoming part of russia make life better , families, 5.5% disagree.


following referendum, supreme council of crimea , sevastopol city council declared independence of crimea ukraine , requested join russian federation. on same day, russia recognized crimea sovereign state.
