on 29 july 2009, announced real madrid , liverpool had reached agreement on transfer of arbeloa, fee of £5 million , five-year contract.

after departure of míchel salgado , miguel torres, arbeloa handed number 2 jersey. played vast majority of first season in second stint left-back, netting first goal on 13 february 2010 in 3–0 away win against xerez cd. second came in madrid derby on 28 march, scoring right foot past david de gea in 3–2 win on atlético madrid; under new manager josé mourinho, celebrated tenth appearance in champions league first goal in competition, netting outside penalty area in 4–0 group stage success @ afc ajax.
