the production of replicas of historical swords originates 19th-century historicism. contemporary replicas can range cheap factory produced look-alikes exact recreations of individual artifacts, including approximation of historical production methods.


some kinds of swords still commonly used today weapons, side arm military infantry. japanese katana, wakizashi , tanto carried infantry , officers in japan , other parts of asia , kukri official melee weapon nepal. other swords in use today sabre, scimitar, shortsword , machete.



in case of rat-tail tang, maker welds thin rod end of blade @ crossguard; rod goes through grip.
in traditional construction, swordsmiths peened such tangs on end of pommel, or welded hilt furniture tang , threaded end screwing on pommel. style referred narrow or hidden tang. modern, less traditional, replicas feature threaded pommel or pommel nut holds hilt , allows dismantling.
in full tang (most commonly used in knives , machetes), tang has same width blade, , same shape grip. in european or asian swords sold today, many advertised full tangs may involve forged rat-tail tang.
