the african union adopted new flag @ 14th ordinary session of assembly of heads of state , government taking place in addis ababa 2010. during 8th african union summit took place in addis ababa on 29 , 30 january 2007, heads of state , government decided launch competition selection of new flag union. prescribed green background flag symbolising hope of africa , stars represent member states.

pursuant decision, african union commission (auc) organised competition selection of new flag african union. auc received total of 106 entries proposed citizens of 19 african countries , 2 diaspora. proposals examined panel of experts put in place african union commission , selected 5 african regions short listing according main directions given heads of state , government.

at 13th ordinary session of assembly, heads of state , government examined report of panel , selected 1 among proposals. flag part of paraphernalia of african union , replaces old one.
