history

born in 1814, andrew barclay 25 years of age when set partnership thomas mcculloch manufacture mill shafts in kilmarnock, east ayrshire, scotland. couple of years later branched out on own manufacture patented gas lamps. in 1847 set workshops specializing in manufacture of winding engines local coal mining industry. however, money gas lamp patent sale never paid , sequestration of company came following year.


by 1859 barclay had recovered setback , newly formed company produced first locomotive. sometime around 1871 andrew barclay set second locomotive building business known barclays & co. had set company younger brother, john, , 4 sons. business remaining closely associated andrew barclay. again not went , companies declared bankrupt in 1874 , 1882 respectively. 4 years after latest collapse, andrew barclay’s business relaunched andrew barclay sons & co. later barclays & co revived. further difficulties arose. in 1892 firm became limited liability company andrew barclay sons & co., ltd. 2 years later andrew removed control of company bore name shareholders. barclay sued company unpaid wages, matter settled out of court 5 years later.


in 1930 company bought business of john cochrane (barrhead) ltd, engine makers , in 1963 acquired goodwill of north british locomotive company, glasgow.


hunslet-barclay

in 1972 company acquired leeds-based hunslet group of companies , name changed in 1989 hunslet-barclay ltd. such, operated 6 ex-british rail class 20 diesels provide motive power weed-killing trains used on national rail network. locomotive interests of hunslet-barclay bought lh group, staffordshire on 31 december 2003, hunslet-barclay @ kilmarnock continuing in business of design, manufacture , refurbishment of multiple units, rolling stock, bogies , wheel-sets.


some barclay locomotives supplied through lennox lange, acted agent barclay.


brush-barclay

after going financial administration in 2007 company acquired locomotive builder brush traction of loughborough through parent, fki group. renamed brush-barclay.


wabtec rail scotland

on 28 february 2011, wabtec announced had acquired brush traction us$31 million. kilmarnock works became wabtec rail scotland.
