in denmark, after law has been passed parliament, 1 third of members can demand referendum. not apply money bills or expropriation. law transfers sovereignty international organisation must subjected referendum unless 5 sixth of mps vote it. in both cases, defeat law no votes must not outnumber yes votes, must number @ least 30% of electorate. since referendums have had more 60% turnout, no bill has yet passed due lack of interest.


in practise, referendums have been held every time new treaties of european union have been approved, when more 5 sixths can found. recently, danish government highly criticized when did not hold referendum regarding controversial lisbon treaty.


the constitution of denmark can changed after referendum. pass, yes votes must not outnumber no votes, must number @ least 40% of electorate.
