history
activated in 1942 under air transport (later troop carrier) command c-47 transport squadron; trained in southeastern united states. deployed north africa part of operation torch landings; being assigned oujda airfield; french morocco. performed troop carrier , transport airlift of supplies ground forces advancing though algeria tunisia under twelfth air force. evacuated wounded personnel rear areas. carried airborne paratroopers , performed airborne assault missions on sicily , italy part of invasion forces.
reassigned ix troop carrier command in european theater of operations (eto) in february 1944 part of pre-invasion buildup of forces in england. performed combat airborne assault missions part of d-day; operation market-garden , operation varsity 1944–1945. performed supply , evacuation missions in france , low countries; participated in western allied invasion of germany; 1945. continued combat airlift , supply missions until german capitulation in may 1945.
squadron continued operate achiet, france during 1945, performing transportation of personnel , supplies within europe; demobilized in place during august, , inactivated paper unit in september 1945.
reactivated part of united states air forces in europe, 1946. assigned transport duties part of european air transport service, 1946–1947 part of army of occupation. inactivated in austria in june 1947. reactivated tactical air command troop carrier squadron in 1947; being assigned texas , equipped c-46s. deployed germany in 1948 support berlin airlift; operated british zone of occupation, c-54s. inactivated in west germany in september 1949.
reactivated under eighteenth air force in 1953 tactical air command c-119 flying boxcar troop carrier squadron. performed routine airlift of supplies , personnel; including army airborne parachute drops until being inactivated due funding restrictions in 1955; reactivated c-130 hercules troop carrier (later tactical airlift) squadron under tac in 1964; performed assigned theater airlift missions until inactivated part of post-vietnam drawdown in 1973.
