the souls library (formally known codrington library) founded through bequest christopher codrington (1668–1710), fellow of college. christopher codrington bequeathed books worth £6,000, in addition £10,000 in currency. bequest allowed library built , endowed. christopher codrington born in barbados, , amassed fortune sugar plantation in west indies. library completed in 1751, , has been in continuous use since then. modern library comprises 185,000 items, third of published before 1800. collections particularly strong in law , history (especially military history).
