the main entrance frederiksberg gardens was, in present form, built in 1755, following fire 2 years earlier @ prince s house, precursor of frederiksberg palace, used located @ site. gate designed lauritz de thurah had become general master builder after eigtved s death. vases @ top of 2 sandstone pillars executed sculptor johann friedrich hännel.


the gate opens path passes between 2 long, yellow buildings white details. 2 surviving wings of prince s house. south wing, located on left-hand side when entering park, converted orangery nicolai eigtved in 1744 , part of royal danish horticultural society s garden. north wing, located on right-hand side, used park s administration.

the chinese summerhouse completed in 1803 replacement pavilion had stood @ center of baroque garden pulled down in 1799. sited on small artificial island accessible across bridge built matching chinese design.


the summerhouse built court architect andreas kirkerup, , rest of buildings in park feature known english garden.


the summerhouse contained hall, 2 cabinets, kitchen , lavatory. window in lavatory in shape of half moon , made of red glass. furniture consisted partly of copies of chinese furniture set of genuine chinese bamboo furniture acquired through asiatic company.


both exterior , interior has rich chinese-inspired decorations, pictures, characters , other ornaments, , there bells on roof. imitation bamboo used ceilings.

the apis temple located on border copenhagen zoo. designed in style of roman temple painter nicolai abildgaard , built in 1802. named egyptian bull-deity apis depicted on frontispice. temple front consists of 10 columns of 8 recycled rebuilding of moltke s palace while last 2 columns replicas. decorations include ox cranium frieze , bull relief, both carved in sandstone.


on inside, temple consists of barrel vaulted room 2 windows had stained glass. room furnished sofa, chairs , console tables royalties use drinking tea. 1874 1970 temple used entrance zoo had been built in 1859 , décor changed. temple open public , has been used art exhibitions.

like apis temple, swiss cottage lies in part of park incorporated when park redesigned in romantic style. designed abildgaard , built between 1800 , 1801, contains hall, cabinet , smaller rooms in royal family take coffee after dinner or stroll in garden. in 1894, house converted residence castle gardener, , interior radically altered.


the style has little switzerland name bears testament period s fascination mountainous regions. cottage built next small lake , vegetation around cottage adapted, conifers instead of deciduous trees, create right atmosphere of setting.

the pheasantry

close swiss cottage stands pheasantry (da. fasangården) designed j.c. krieger , built in 1723. name suggests, building built in connection pheasantry raised pheasants royal household. when park redesigned around 1800, there plans tear down house instead turned residence king’s private secretary, p.c. jessen, had used during summer since 1798. building adapted in 1828 jørgen hansen koch. served summer residence adam oehlenschläger , family 1842 1850.

another garden feature typical of romantic garden artificial waterfall. waterfall 7 metres high , partly created out of marble blocks building site of marble church. waterfall left ruin many years reconstructed in 2004.


elephant viewpoint

when norman foster, in collaboration danish landscape architect stig l. andersson, designed new elephant house adjacent copenhagen zoo, done extension of frederiksberg gardens. three-metre high wall once separated 2 has been replaced simple fence, visitors public park can watch elephants, while affording elephants distant views well. enclosure steps away park, rising height of domes. distance, these appear buried in ground, surrounded ferns , trees.
