history
formation , history

the kirkcaldy troop raised in 1797 but, after becoming fife yeomanry cavalry in 1803, disbanded in 1828. unit re-raised fife yeomanry cavalry in 1831 disbanded again in 1838. raised again 1st fifeshire mounted rifle volunteer corps in 1860.


meanwhile forfar yeomanry raised in 1794 disbanded in 1828. unit re-raised forfarshire yeomanry in 1856 disbanded again in 1862. raised again 1st forfarshire light horse volunteer corps in 1876.


second boer war

on 13 december 1899, decision allow volunteer forces serve in second boer war made. due string of defeats during black week in december, 1899, british government realized going need more troops regular army, issuing royal warrant on 24 december 1899. warrant officially created imperial yeomanry. royal warrant asked standing yeomanry regiments provide service companies of approximately 115 men each. in addition this, many british citizens (usually mid-upper class) volunteered join new regiment.


in 1901 1st fifeshire mounted rifle volunteer corps , 1st forfarshire light horse volunteer corps amalgamated form fifeshire , forfarshire imperial yeomanry. word imperial dropped title on formation of territorial force in 1908.








first world war

in accordance territorial , reserve forces act 1907 (7 edw. 7, c.9), brought territorial force being, tf intended home defence force service during wartime , members not compelled serve outside country. however, on outbreak of war on 4 august 1914, many members volunteered imperial service. therefore, tf units split in august , september 1914 1st line (liable overseas service) , 2nd line (home service unable or unwilling serve overseas) units. later, 3rd line formed act reserve, providing trained replacements 1st , 2nd line regiments.


1/1st fife , forfar yeomanry

they dismounted , became 14th (ffy) battalion of black watch. part of 74th (yeomanry) division served in egypt , palestine in 1917 , 1918 before moving france in 1918.


2/1st fife , forfar yeomanry

the 2nd line regiment formed in september 1914 , in january 1915 assigned 2/1st highland mounted brigade. on 31 march 1916, remaining mounted brigades ordered numbered in single sequence; brigade numbered 1st mounted brigade , joined 1st mounted division in norfolk. in july 1916, 1st mounted division reorganised 1st cyclist division , regiment transferred mounted unit 2nd mounted brigade in new 1st mounted division (the former 3rd mounted division) in brentwood area.


in november 1916, regiment converted cyclist unit in 6th cyclist brigade @ ashington in northumberland. july 1917, @ acklington , remained there until 1918 when went ireland 6th cyclist brigade. stationed @ curragh until end of war.


3/1st fife , forfar yeomanry

the 3rd line regiment formed in 1915; summer, affiliated reserve cavalry regiment @ aldershot. in june 1916, @ perth. regiment disbanded in 1917 personnel transferring 2nd line or 4th (reserve) battalion of black watch @ ripon.


between wars

on 7 february 1920, regiment reconstituted in territorial army hq still @ kirkcaldy. following experience of war, decided fourteen senior yeomanry regiments retained horsed cavalry, rest being transferred other roles. result, on 6 january 1921, regiment 1 of 8 converted , reduced 2nd (fife , forfar) armoured car company, tank corps, later renumbered 20th (fife , forfar) armoured car company, royal tank corps. on 30 april 1939, transferred royal armoured corps.


by 1939, had become clear new european war break out, , doubling of territorial army authorised, each unit forming duplicate. lothians expanded armoured regiment in august 1939 1st fife , forfar yeomanry , formed duplicate 2nd fife , forfar yeomanry in same month.


second world war

1st fife , forfar yeomanry

the 1st fife , forfar yeomanry landed in france reconnaissance regiment 51st (highland) infantry division in british expeditionary force in september 1939 , took part in dunkirk evacuation in june 1940. battalion later served in united kingdom 28th armoured brigade in 9th armoured division until august 1944 when moved north west europe , saw action @ crossing of rhine 31st armoured brigade in 79th armoured division in march 1945.


2nd fife , forfar yeomanry

the 2nd fife , forfar yeomanry took part in normandy landings 29th armoured brigade in 11th armoured division in june 1944. subsequently saw action in operation epsom in june 1944, operation goodwood in july 1944, operation bluecoat in august 1944 , battle of bulge in december 1944.


post-war

when territorial army re-formed in may 1947, regiment resumed pre-war role armoured car regiment. amalgamated scottish horse form fife , forfar yeomanry/scottish horse in 1956. although fife , forfar yeomanry/scottish horse disbanded in 1975, linage maintained c fife , forfar yeomanry/scottish horse squadron of scottish , north irish yeomanry based in cupar in fife.
