marion anderson, became band councillor big trout lake in 1950, first woman ever serve first nations band councillor in ontario. later awarded order of ontario in honour of distinction.
the band s website describes 3 locally owned stores serving community supplying groceries, clothing, fuel, , various other supplies. community relies heavily on these businesses north west company, store found northern operations, asked leave community in 1996. community felt better off keeping business locally owned , operated. post office , canadian imperial bank of commerce agency bank located in community. there 1 band-run community radio station, 100.3 fm, broadcasts public health announcements, sunday mass, , rebroadcasts wawatay native communications society sioux lookout, ontario.
the first nation policed big trout lake police force administered ontario provincial police (opp). there 19 first nations in ontario operate agreement , 4 in north-western ontario. remainder policed directly opp or nishnawbe-aski police service.

there water pumping stations providing underground running water homes on island while living on mainland serviced water tanker trucks. there underground sewage piping 2 lagoons @ west end of island. school, teacherages, , post island houses structures supplied underground sewage, remainder of community serviced sewage truck.
the community fly-in reservation regularly scheduled flights wasaya airways. big trout lake airport has gravel airstrip 1,191 metres (3,907 ft) in length. during winter months, community accessible winter road pickle lake serviced ontario highway 599, northern highway in province.
