a total of 191 teams 54 uefa member associations participated in 2015–16 uefa europa league. association ranking based on uefa country coefficients used determine number of participating teams each association:

associations 1–51 (except liechtenstein) each have 3 teams qualify.

as winners of 2014–15 uefa europa league, sevilla qualified 2015–16 uefa champions league; 2015–16 uefa europa league berth otherwise have earned finishing 5th in 2014–15 la liga vacated , not passed spanish team.


associations 52–53 each have 2 teams qualify.
liechtenstein , gibraltar each have 1 team qualify (liechtenstein organises domestic cup , no domestic league; gibraltar per decision uefa executive committee).
the top 3 associations of 2014–15 uefa respect fair play ranking each gain additional berth (the 2015–16 season last fair play berths allocated europa league).
moreover, 33 teams eliminated 2015–16 uefa champions league transferred europa league.

association ranking

for 2015–16 uefa europa league, associations allocated places according 2014 uefa country coefficients, took account performance in european competitions 2009–10 2013–14.

apart allocation based on country coefficients, associations may have additional teams participating in europa league, noted below:

(fp) – additional berth via fair play ranking (netherlands, england, republic of ireland)
(cl) – additional teams transferred champions league
(el) – vacated berth due europa league title holders playing in champions league







distribution

in default access list, sevilla enter group stage (as fifth-placed team of 2014–15 la liga). however, since qualified champions league europa league title holders, spot qualified in europa league group stage vacated, , following changes default allocation system made:

the domestic cup winners of association 13 (switzerland) promoted third qualifying round group stage.
the domestic cup winners of association 18 (cyprus) promoted second qualifying round third qualifying round.
the domestic cup winners of associations 24 , 25 (sweden , bulgaria) promoted first qualifying round second qualifying round.


redistribution rules

a europa league place vacated when team qualifies both champions league , europa league, or qualifies europa league more 1 method. when place vacated, redistributed within national association following rules (regulations articles 3.03 , 3.04):

when domestic cup winners (considered highest-placed qualifier within national association latest starting round) qualify champions league, europa league place vacated. result, highest-placed team in league have not yet qualified european competitions qualify europa league, europa league qualifiers finish above them in league moved 1 place (the 2015–16 season first particular arrangement domestic cup runners-up no longer guaranteed place in europa league in scenario).
when domestic cup winners qualify europa league through league position, place through league position vacated. result, highest-placed team in league have not yet qualified european competitions qualify europa league, europa league qualifiers finish above them in league moved 1 place if possible.
for associations europa league place reserved league cup winners, qualify europa league lowest-placed qualifier. if league cup winners have qualified european competitions through other methods, reserved europa league place taken highest-placed team in league have not yet qualified european competitions.
a fair play place taken highest-ranked team in domestic fair play table have not yet qualified european competitions.
