examination fellowships

in 3 years following award of bachelor s degrees, students graduating oxford , current oxford postgraduate students having graduated elsewhere eligible apply examination fellowships (sometimes informally referred prize fellowships ) of 7 years each. each year several dozen typically so. 2 examination fellows elected each year, although college has awarded single place in previous years, , made no award on rare occasions.


the competition, offered since 1878 , open women since 1979, takes place on 2 days in late september, 2 examinations of 3 hours each per day.


two on single subject of candidate s choice, options comprising classics, english literature, economics, history, law, philosophy, , politics. candidates choose classics subject have additional translation examination on third day. 2 on general subjects. each general examination candidates choose list of 3 questions. past questions have included:

should orange prize fiction open both men , women?
moral character of orgy change when participants wear nazi uniforms?

before 2010 candidates faced examination, free-form essay on single, pre-selected word.


four 6 finalists invited viva voce or oral examination. previously, viva candidates invited dinner 75 members of college. dinner did not form part of assessment, intended reward candidates had reached latter stages of selection process. however, dinner has been discontinued college felt candidates worried part of assessment process.


about dozen examination fellows @ college @ 1 time. there no compulsory teaching or research requirements; can study free @ oxford room , board. londoners can pursue approved non-academic careers if desired, reduced stipend, long pursue academia on part-time basis , attend weekend dinners @ college during first academic year. of 2011 each examination fellow receives stipend of £14,842 annually first 2 years; stipend varies depending on whether fellow pursues academic career.
