between 1920 , 1947, professional-grade saxophones manufactured c.g. conn had rolled toneholes. in 1930s, conn developed unique type of saxophone pad called conn res-o-pads , designed use on saxophones rolled toneholes. conn res-o-pads have internal metal reinforcing ring hidden under leather covering around circumference of pad. notable feature diameter of pad extends on rim of key-cup, thereby giving wider surface area rolled tone-hole seal onto. rim impressions res-o-pads minimal , unlike standard pads cannot floated in. though designed fix key-cups purely via friction, saxophone repairers glue them in place using shellac or hot melt adhesive. res-o-pads can challenging size correctly because (unlike standard saxophone pads come in 0.5 mm size steps) available in 1/32nds of inch sizes may not correspond closely key-cup diameters. newly produced conn res-o-pads still available specialist suppliers , favored saxophone collectors because give authentic , feel vintage saxophones rolled toneholes e.g. made conn, kohlert , keilwerth. however, possible fit standard pads saxophone rolled toneholes (and many people do) without noticeable disadvantage regarding quality of sound produced.
