during jurassic period, pangea began pull apart causing separation of north america south america. rifting produced subduction zone nazca plate subducting east under south american plate. part of subducting plate baudo-island arc separated south american continent marginal colombian sea. formation of extensional back-arc basin associated subduction origin of middle magdalena basin in late jurassic. throughout cretaceous, basin experienced thermal subsidence , 5 transgressive-regressive cycles part of marine megacycle.


in paleocene, rate of subduction increased causing marginal colombian sea close , baudo-island arc collide south american continent. caused accretion of western ranges , uplift of central ranges transforming back-arc basin pre-andean foreland basin. around time of oligocene, nazca plate increased subduction east while south american plate experienced westward pull. caused andean orogeny in miocene , uplift of eastern ranges in pliocene. middle magdalena basin intermontane basin situated between uplifted central , eastern ranges.
