controversy surrounds won 1925 nfl championship. officially, chicago cardinals listed 1925 nfl champions because finished best record; however, many pottsville fans @ time claimed maroons legitimate champions. maroons , cardinals top contenders title, pottsville winning late-season meeting between them, 21–7. maroons scheduled game against team of university of notre dame all-stars in philadelphia (and winning 9–7) on same day frankford yellow jackets scheduled play game in same city. frankford protested, saying violating protected territory rights.


although nfl president joe carr warned maroons in writing faced suspension if played in philadelphia, maroons claimed carr approved game during telephone call, , played anyway. in response, carr fined club, suspended league rights , privileges (including right play nfl championship), , returned franchise league.


in 2003, nfl decided again examine case regarding 1925 championship. in october of year, nfl voted 30–2 not reopen case, philadelphia , pittsburgh, league s 2 pennsylvania-based teams, voting in favor. thus, cardinals still listed 1925 nfl champions.
