the work in 3 movements:
i. allegro appassionato
the first movement opens piano declamation of 1 of major themes, , moves furious tutti section. opening section contains expression of movement s chief melodies. through inversion, retrograde, , counterpoint variations of these melodies (which appear in later movements), barber spins out entire movement. begins (after tonally ambiguous introduction) , ends in e minor (hayden 1982, 4, 23–24; lu 1986, 2).
ii. canzone: moderato
the second movement, predominantly in c-sharp minor, based on 1 sweet sad melody , far more subdued first movement. movement transcribed , expanded elegy flute , piano, composed in 1959 flautist manfred ibel. published in 1962, canzone (elegy), op. 38a (heyman 1992, 413).
iii. allegro molto
the third movement, in b-flat minor, in furiously fast 5/8 time, pounding ostinato gives piece rather devilish sound. makes heavy use of brass instruments, , driven recapitulation of brief motivic theme, giving movement modified rondo form.
