nob end locks in operation


there several notable features along canal, including prestolee aqueduct , clifton aqueduct, both of grade ii listed structures. nob end locks (sometimes referred prestolee locks) sit @ junction of 3 arms of canal @ nob end. comprise 2 sets of 3 staircase locks, separated passing basin. these locks served lower level of canal 64 feet (20 m) on distance of 600 feet (183 m). upper staircase still visible, of lower staircase filled in @ point in 1950s, , of stonework removed.


a major breach of canal along bury arm revealed scale of engineering used in construction of retaining wall. railway rails, used increase strength of walls, still visible @ site of breach.


the mount sion steam crane (a depiction of used logo of manchester bolton & bury canal society) sits rusting , unused @ mount sion, on bury arm. 1 of earliest surviving cranes in england, built time 1875–1884 mount sion bleach works thomas smith & sons of rodley , used unload coal boxes barges yard below canal. granted grade ii listed status in 2011.
