the birmingham end of a47 starts 1 mile centre of birmingham @ ashsted circus roundabout on a4540 middleway running north-east through vauxhall nechells parkway , saltley road. road continues north east following cross country route , river rea first heartlands parkway , fort parkway. birmingham section of road terminates @ spitfire island, roundabout on a452 halfway between m6 junction 5 , a38 tyburn island.


the route between birmingham , nuneaton known a47 until 1986, when renumbered, b4114, following completion of m42.

the a47 in normandy way, hinckley


at nuneaton road re-emerges hinckley road junction a444, near railway station. leaving nuneaton, passes north warwickshire , hinckley college on left, meets a4254 @ roundabout , a5 watling street near longshoot hotel. follows a5 half-mile entering leicestershire , district of hinckley , bosworth, leaves @ roundabout bypass hinckley north dodwells road normandy way completed in summer of 1994. section passes through large industrial estate , close tesco distribution centre, crossing ashby-de-la-zouch canal. meets roundabout near triumph motorbike factory. bypasses earl shilton on southern side single carriageway road. runs through leicester forest on line parallel m69. enters leicester forest east crossing m1 near service station , continues on city of leicester @ b5380 junction. road continues city centre crossing a563 outer ring-road before becoming part of inner ring road.

uppingham road shops


leaving leicester road becomes humberstone road, uppingham road. passes under midland main line , meets b6146 st barnabas road south, passes on former leicester belgrave road peterborough north section of great northern railway follows road far houghton on hill. @ a6030 crossroads, becomes part of leicester outer ring road in north evington. @ humberstone, beyond a563 (outer ring road) , goodwood road (projected extension of outer ring road) crossroads, road meets b667 spencefield lane south, evington. between downing drive junction , thurnby hill enters leicestershire , district of harborough. @ thurnby meets station road north, scraptoft. leaving bushby climbs winkadale hill countryside.

the road travels through houghton on hill, crossroads leicester airport (to south) , old ingarsby (to north) next rose , crown , jet houghton garage, , heads down palace hill right turn gaulby, left turn tilton on hill, crosses river sence. two-mile £2.5 million three-lane billesdon bypass opened in october 1986, passing north of village, staggered crossroads. meets b6047 north-south market harborough melton mowbray road (for tilton on hill) @ staggered crossroads @ highest point of a47, @ around 670 feet. passes through skeffington right turn rolleston heads through tugby, traversed midshires way , national cycle route 63. winds way towards one-kilometre £1.2 million east norton bypass, opened in december 1990, passing south of village, left turn loddington , right turn hallaton. leaving village, after rejoining former route, passes former railway station. heads down hill 3 lanes , crosses eye brook , here next ten miles in rutland, , 3 lanes become two.



the a6003 roundabout @ ayston


there left turn belton-in-rutland , right turn allexton (in leicestershire) road crossed leicestershire round , macmillan way. two-mile £1.9 million wardley hill improvement opened in october 1987, , there right turn (only) wardley, road crossed rutland round. road improvement took less-crooked route closer village, less steep incline avoiding top of wardley hill. one-and-a-half-mile £1.4 million uppingham bypass opened in june 1982, taking shorter route north of town, home of uppingham school. meets a6003 (for oakham) @ roundabout, , meets former glaston road route , crossroads bisbrooke, south. passes through glaston, crossroads wing (to north) , seaton (to south) near old pheasant. passes on tunnel of oakham kettering line. entering morcott passes redwings lodge, former travelodge, , new cafe restaurant, country lounge little chef, on left , there left turn morcott, road crossed rutland round. meets a6121 (for stamford) , b672 (for caldecott) crosses tunnel of former railway. @ right turn barrowden there morcott windmill, , road again crossed rutland round. there crossroads south luffenham , barrowden.

from shire oaks (coppice leys) through tixover, road has been straightened, , right welland valley (rutland - northamptonshire boundary). @ tixover there crossroads, rutland round follows road east. road crosses river welland, jurassic way crosses road. duddington bypass, road enters northamptonshire , district of east northamptonshire, opened in 1975. section has busy roundabout meets south-west/north-east corridor a43. on northern edge of collyweston great wood, meets kingscliffe road collyweston, @ west gate of raf wittering. follows perimeter fence of airfield collyweston cross roads (now no longer crossroads due airfield), there right turn kings cliffe. woodland here northern edge of historic rockingham forest. road towards wittering lodge has been straightened, , crosses city of peterborough boundary (former northamptonshire, cambridgeshire). @ toll bar cottage, there left turn wittering, opposite bedford purlieus national nature reserve. road meets a1.


a1 - kings lynn

the road formerly went through wansford, further south. £250,000 dual-carriageway wansford north bypass opened in january 1965. there right-turn sutton. crossed roman road ermine street. dual-carriageway £9 million ailsworth-castor bypass opened in september 1991. around peterborough, peterborough longthorpe grade separated junction (gsj) opened in december 1987 meets a1260. there gsj bretton , sainsbury s, , passes peterborough city hospital. £1.2 million peterborough westwood gsj opened in january 1987 near ravensthorpe. section of road called soke parkway (named after soke of peterborough). when first built, in mid-1970s, a47 followed a15 paston parkway.


it crosses east coast main line , meets a15 @ new england near morrisons (former safeway), , boulevard , brotherhood retail parks @ walton north , new england south. there gsj near paston north , meets other strand of a15 @ gsj near gunthorpe. meets southern terminus of new a16 alignment before meeting a1139 @ roundabout , crossing car dyke. 3-mile (4.8 km) £7.2 million eye bypass opened eye road in october 1991, diverting traffic paston parkway, , partly built on former peterborough wisbech railway. there local access roundabout @ eye green near esso eye green service station, travelodge , peterborough eye little chef on right, becomes thorney road, causeway. landscape becomes flat known fens. 3-mile (4.8 km) dual-carriageway bypass of thorney opened on 14 december 2005. road meets b1040 , b1167 @ roundabouts. near thorney toll, road enters cambridgeshire , district of fenland near new toll service station. straight road finishes @ guyhirn, meeting b1187 , crossing , following river nene , nene way. ⁄2-mile (0.80 km) £3.7 million guyhirn diversion opened in october 1990. road heads north-east, following east bank of river nene. 5-mile (8.0 km) £6 million wisbech/west walton bypass opened in autumn 1984. former route leaves b198 @ roundabout. meets level crossing, , enters norfolk , district of king s lynn , west norfolk before roundabout a1101 elm , emneth @ elme hall hotel. passes total wisbech services , wisbech little chef meets old route (b198) @ roundabout , becomes 6-mile (9.7 km) £23 million dual-carriageway walpole highway/tilney high end bypass opened in summer 1996. there exit walpole highway, , terrington st john. passes near tilney high end. near tilney saints, meets old route @ roundabout, becoming single carriageway main road, pullover road. meets end of a17 @ large roundabout , west lynn little chef.

from king s lynn, road goes on river great ouse , fen rivers way, near sugar beet factories on busy concrete dual-carriageway built in 1975. meets a148 @ gsj. a10 , a149 have terminus here, @ hardwick flyover (opened on 30 october 2003) near large hardwick industrial estate (home of campbell s soup) , ramada hotel. becomes constitution hill, passing north runcton middleton, passes crown , st mary s church lynn road.


next east winch, passes saints s church, west bilney passes st cecilia s church. former king s lynn-swaffham railway crossed @ point. there right-turn pentney , meets b1153 east walton. half-mile £2.8 million narborough bypass, opened in november 1992, road crosses river nar , enters district of breckland. there straight section meets a1122 (for raf marham) @ roundabout @ start of five-mile £5 million part-dual-carriageway swaffham bypass, opened in june 1981. there exit swaffham, , gsj a1065 (for fakenham).


it passes wind turbines , there roundabout joins former route before crossed peddars way. there left turn sporle , passes necton heads north-west through little fransham, passing canary , linnet, left turn crane s corner. seven-mile £5 million part-dual-carriageway east dereham bypass opened in spring 1978, built on part of disused railway line. passes near wendling , st peter , st paul church meets b1146 (for dereham) , a1075 (for shipdham) near tesco supermarket , b1135. b1147 leaves swanton morley. three-mile £9 million east dereham-north tuddenham improvement opened in august 1992, passes north tuddenham. bypasses hockering. enters district of broadland @ start of bypass of honingham, crosses river tud. before roundabout @ easton, enters district of south norfolk. dual-carriageway £62 million norwich bypass opened in september 1992. @ longwater intersection, a1074 follows former route through norwich near longwater retail park , sainsbury s. near bawburgh, crosses river yare. there gsj b1108, little melton , colney. @ cringleford, meets a11 @ thickthorn interchange , total thickthorn services norwich little chef , crosses breckland line. near keswick hall, meets a140 @ gsj @ harford bridge, south of norwich, near tesco, crosses great eastern main line. crossed boudica s way, meets a146 @ gsj. crosses river yare again @ postwick viaduct , enters district of broadland. crosses wherry line , meets a1042 @ gsj. section end of bypass blofield, one-mile £1.2 million postwick-blofield dualling, opened in november 1987. there left turn great plumstead. one-mile £4 million dual-carriageway blofield bypass opened in february 1983, starts @ roundabout brundall near total broadlands services , broadlands little chef. becomes single carriageway , passes north burlingham near staggered white house crossroads b1140. three-mile £7.1 million dual-carriageway acle bypass opened in march 1989, ends @ roundabout a1048 near travelodge , acle little chef, becoming single carriageway new road. acle, road enters acle straight 7 miles of straight , level single carriageway great yarmouth, 1 curve @ road house diner. road notorious congestion, during holiday season, , number of accidents, due drainage ditches on either side of road fatal, , demands dualling have been heard many years, although there no current plans go ahead this. enters district of great yarmouth, passes close breydon water. northern section of two-mile £19 million great yarmouth western bypass (a12) opened in march 1986, , southern section opened in may 1985.

in february 2017, highways england announced a47 extended around 10 miles renumbering section of a12, runs great yarmouth s western bypass/vauxhall roundabout intersects a47/a12 , a1064 @ moment, continuing through gorleston relief bypass, passing james paget hospital , continuing through lowestoft intersects a12 road terminate , a12 starts continue on london.


as of 11 february 2017, around half of a12 has been renumbered in lowestoft hopton-on-sea visible signage of a12 had been recovered a47, section between hopton-on-sea , great yarmouth has had yellow signs notifying of renumbering change a12 signage has not been removed.
