according united states census bureau, city has total area of 17.57 square miles (45.51 km), of 16.86 square miles (43.67 km) land , 0.71 square miles (1.84 km) water. city s geography rolling, elevation lowest highest points in city varying hundred feet or more. downtown area , adjacent residential district (which formed original core of city when incorporated) in shallow valley. lot of area around apple valley still undeveloped, or contains large quarries.
