crypt


the original building (building i), monumental westwerk, completed before 1000. in first half of 11th century, westwerk rebuilt after fire (building ii). knight walther, brother of anno ii, archbishop of cologne, buried in crypt in 1075. in course of further building phase (building iii), vaulted aisles erected, st. andrew s chapel on northern aisle. @ same time, transepts expanded, westwerk rebuilt secondary crypt , sacristy , attached cloister added south transept. altar consecrated on 11 july 1118 archbishop frederick i. st. stephen s chapel consecrated in 1149.


in further phase of construction (building iv) large hall crypt, apse , vaulted choir installed. mary choir, paradise , east cloister built. nave , transepts vaulted , whole interior received painted decoration. phase of construction ended reconsecration of church archbishop rainald of dassel (r. 1159–1167) in 1166. western portion of building rebuilt last quarter of 12th century , 13th century. old westwerk made appear part of nave removal of supports, partitioning, , installation of new vaulting in last 1 , half bays. master sigefridus of soest spent years between 1313 , 1340 creating silver-gilt shrine of st. patroclus.

the crypt blown in 1817. during aerial attack in 1944, north side of westwerk , vaults severely damaged. in aerial attacks of 1945, organ destroyed, apse obliterated , there severe damage spire , vaulting. reconstruction began laying of groundstone in 1949. 1954, new high altar had been erected, , vaults , apse had been repainted. southern cloister , eastern , southern wings renovated. local painter hans kaiser created windows westwerk , secondary crypt.
