the idaho centennial trail (ict) route along existing trails , primitive roads. hikers typically start @ southern trailhead near murphy hot springs on idaho-nevada border in june when snow levels starting recede , travel northward through high desert goal of entering higher country before heat of summer sets in. thru-hikers approach sawtooth mountains snows have receded enough mid-july allow easier , safer travel. end of trail @ idaho-british columbia border must reached before snows of late september/early october.
the ict located in sawtooth wilderness, frank church-river of no return wilderness , selway-bitterroot wilderness more 300 miles (483 km). within these areas trail borders middle fork of salmon river , selway river. these rivers both bestowed designation national wild , scenic rivers designation due largely frank church of whom 1 of idaho s wilderness areas named.
north of selway-bitterroot, trail hop-scotches along idaho-montana border on backbone of bitterroot mountains more 85 miles (137 km) on high ridges. dozens of high mountain lakes along portion of route beckon angler , delight in scenery.
