history

it not known when broad chalke first inhabited or called fragmentary records saxon times indicate whole chalke valley area thriving.


9th century

an anglo-saxon charter of 826 records name of area including bowerchalke , broadchalke cealcan gemere.


10th century

in 955 anglo-saxon king eadwig granted nuns of wilton abbey estate called chalke included land in broad chalke , bowerchalke. charter records village name aet ceolcan. charter in 974 records name cheolca or cheolcam.


11th century

the domesday book in 1086 divided chalke valley 8 manors: chelke or chelce or celce (bowerchalke , broad chalke), eblesborne (ebbesbourne wake), fifehide (fifield), cumbe (coombe bissett), humitone (homington), odestoche (odstock), stradford (stratford tony , bishopstone) , trow (circa alvediston , tollard royal).


12th century

in 12th century area known stowford hundred, subsequently chalke hundred. included parishes of berwick st john, ebbesbourne wake, fifield bavant, semley, tollard royal , chalke . charter of 1165 records village name chalca, , pipe rolls in 1174 have chalche.


13th century

all saints church built during 13th century. curia regis rolls of 1207 records village name chelkfeet of fines, , of 1242 records chalke. name burchelke (bowerchalke) first appeared in 1225.


14th century

a saxon charter of 1304 records village name cheolc , cheolcan. feudal aids of 1316 uses chawke, whilst saxon cartulary of 1321 uses cealce. tax lists of 1327, 1332 , 1377 variously record name chalk magna , chalke magna. brode chalk first mentioned in 1380.


15th century

the village recorded in deeds of 1425 brodechalke.


16th century

circa 1536 henry viii granted chalke sir william herbert, 1st earl of pembroke during dissolution of monasteries. in 1560 queen elizabeth granted reddish house , farm william reddiche owned several properties in village free tenant of earl of pembroke in wilton.


a rectory (now grade ii* listed) built west of church.


the wills of william king (1545) , john penny (1555) record village name brood chalke, whilst earl of pembroke surveys of 1567 , 1590 list brodechalke , broadchalke.


17th century

in 1605 of michael angod spelled village name broadchalk. 1631 earl of pembroke s survey used modern form of broad chalke, did of john farrent in 1699. however, 1671 dissenters meeting house certificates used broadcholk.


by 1608 pembroke estate had acquired manors of knighton , stoke farthing. house called knighton manor built towards end of century.


18th century

the spelling of broad chalke continued vary; in 1778 of elizabeth fifield spelled broadchalk, whilst 1784 of richard follit used broad chalk.


19th century

again spelling of broad chalke varied. in 1804 of josiah gould spelled broad chalke, whilst 1830 of colt hoare used broad chalk.


by 1846 cottage served national school, , in 1860 new school , teacher s house built opposite church.


chalke comparatively large, disconnected estate divided 2 ecclesiastical parishes of broad chalk , bowerchalke in 1880.


20th century

in 1919 pembroke family started sell individual farms.


in 1963 older children began attend secondary school @ wilton. pupil numbers @ broad chalke increased after closure of village schools @ bowerchalke , bishopstone. in 1990s school extended hall , fourth classroom.


the spelling of broad chalke continued vary: ordnance survey maps , village road signs spelled broad chalke, whilst electoral register used broadchalke.


21st century

in 2007 new school built on eastern outskirts of village, , older school became private housing.
