Ammunition 152 mm howitzer M1943 (D-1)
1 - he/frag shell of-530,
2 - fragmentary shell o-530,
3 - heac (anti-concrete) shell g-530.
the d-1 had large variety of ammunition, including high-explosive, armor-piercing, heat, shrapnel, illumination, , chemical.
the d-1 used separate loading ammunition, 8 different charges. charges included full charge zh-536 , smaller charges ranging first sixth , smallest. special charge used bp-540 heat projectile. propellant charges produced in full , third variants in munitions factories. other charges derived them removing small gunpowder bags charge cartridge. flash suppression there special chemical mixture inserted cartridge before night firing. 152 mm projectiles d-1 weighed 40 kg; difficult job loaders, had carry projectiles alone.
when set fragmentation mode, of-530 projectile produced fragments covered area 70 meters wide , 30 meters deep. when set high-explosive (he) action, exploding shell produced crater 3.5 meters in diameter , 1.2 meters deep. despite d-1 s withdrawal service in mid- 1970s, of-530 still fired modern 152 mm ordnance pieces of russian army.
the g-530 heac anti-concrete shell had muzzle velocity of 457 m/s when fired first charge. @ range of 1 kilometer had 358 m/s terminal velocity , able punch through 80 centimeters of reinforced concrete before detonating tnt charge increased total penetration 114 centimeters. g-530 not fired full charge without putting crew @ risk of having shell explode in barrel. special version of shell, g-530sh, developed allow use full charge.
the bp-540 heat projectile not used during world war ii. had armour penetration of 250 millimeters @ incident angle of 90°, 220 millimeters @ 60°, 120 millimeters @ 30°.
in late 1950s old ammunition stocks d-1 removed soviet inventory. shells retained of-530, o-530, g-530/g-530sh, , possibly chemical shells. soviet army possessed 152 mm nuclear shell, not clear whether shell used d-1.
